OpenAI has confirmed it will acquire Astral, the team behind uv, Ruff, and ty. If you write Python, you probably use at least one of these. uv handles dependencies, Ruff does linting, ty does type checking. They’re now part of the Codex ecosystem, which has over 2 million weekly active users and has grown 3x since January.

The acquisition makes sense when you look at where Codex is heading. It’s moving past code generation into the rest of the development lifecycle, running tools, verifying outputs, managing environments. Astral’s tools sit right in that workflow. Rather than building its own versions, OpenAI bought the ones developers already use.

Meta buys Manus AI for $2B+, with Chinese investors bought out at close

Meta acquires Manus AI for more than 2 billion dollars

Meta has agreed to buy Manus, the Singapore-based AI agent platform that blew up in early 2025, backed by Tencent and other Chinese investors. The price: more than $2 billion. Manus generates $125 million in annual recurring revenue. The deal came together in under two weeks.

Meta says it will keep the Manus service running while folding the technology into its own products. All Chinese investors, including Tencent, have been fully bought out. Manus will shut down its China operations on close. Whether that’s enough to satisfy regulators worried about cross-border AI ownership is still unclear.

This puts Meta alongside Salesforce and ServiceNow in making billion-dollar bets on enterprise AI agents. Full story at LA Times

MiroThinker H1 beats GPT-5.4 and Claude 4.6 on BrowseComp, using 6x fewer steps

MiroThinker H1 research agent beats frontier models on BrowseComp benchmark

MiroMind published a paper on MiroThinker H1, a research agent that just topped OpenAI’s BrowseComp leaderboard. It outperformed both GPT-5.4 and Claude 4.6 on web-based research tasks while using 6x fewer browser interactions than other approaches.

The idea is simple: verify before you act. Instead of hammering through web pages, MiroThinker H1 checks its own outputs at each step, which cuts down on wasted actions. The companion MiroThinker-1.7 model handles the underlying reasoning. BrowseComp requires agents to browse and reason across multiple web sources at once, so hitting the top of that leaderboard while making far fewer moves is worth paying attention to.

Patreon CEO calls AI “fair use” claims bogus, and he has a point

Jack Conte, CEO of Patreon, went after the AI industry’s fair use argument at SXSW this week. His question was straightforward: if training on creators’ work is legally fair use, why are AI companies paying multimillion-dollar deals to Disney, Condé Nast, and Warner Music? If the content is free to use, why pay the big rights holders at all?

“If it’s legal to just use it, why pay?” he asked the audience. “Why pay them and not creators, not the millions of illustrators and musicians and writers, whose work has been consumed by these models to build hundreds of billions of dollars of value for these companies?”

Conte said he’s not anti-AI. But he thinks creators should get paid when their work trains commercial models, and he’s putting Patreon behind that position. Full story on TechCrunch

acestep.cpp: AI music generation that runs entirely on your machine

acestep.cpp GitHub repo - portable C++ AI music generation with GGML

A developer released acestep.cpp, a C++17 implementation of ACE-Step 1.5 built on GGML (the same library behind llama.cpp). Give it text and lyrics, get stereo 48kHz MP3 or WAV back. Everything runs locally. It supports CPU, CUDA, ROCm, Metal, and Vulkan.

Pre-quantized models are on Hugging Face. The Q8_0 download is about 7.7GB, which is manageable if you’re already running local models. If you’re building anything with on-device audio generation, this is worth a look.
